The two articles, “When Mindfulness Meets the Classroom” by Lauren Cassani Davis and “Instead of Detention, These Students Get Meditation” by Deborah Bloom, both explain the benefits of practicing mindfulness in schools. It is very important for teachers to be trained in mindfulness because it helps students, teachers, and the overall school environment. Mindfulness can be described as acknowledging our feelings, thoughts, and emotions while being focused and aware of what surrounds us. Many students benefit from practicing mindfulness. Lauren Cassani Davis explains how a prestigious high school has all of their new students go through a mindfulness course. Deborah Bloom, in her article, directly talks to the students and based on their quotes they definitely seem to find benefits in mindfulness. Bloom writes, “‘When I get mad at something or somebody, I just take some deep breaths, keep doing my work and tune everyone out’ said Darci Crawford, 9. “‘It gives you confidence when you need to do something important’” (paragraph 6). Mindfulness helps students of all age groups, from elementary school to high school. If students are taking deep breaths instead of being violent, then they are more likely to do well in their educational career. Teachers are also benefiting from practicing mindfulness at school.
