“Some leaders are born women,” according to Geraldine Ferraro; this could not be truer. In Kiera Cass’s novel The One, new monarchs will soon arise in Illéa. With the future king seeking a bride, one must consider who will lead the nation into harmony and prosperity. Through these necessities, one character, truly, comes to mind: America Singer. America Singer becomes more princess-like in every page with her morality, cleverness, and need to contribute.
Through America’s charity, she better becomes fit for the role of princess. When under a stressful dilemma, Lady America does not forget to show charity by asking, “would you want to come with me” (Cass 118) without hesitation. With her offer, a rejected, little girl is given the chance and hope for a better life through a supply of food, a certainty of a job, and a haven of pleasantness. Through America’s action, the reader can infer America’s love for her country and her people. With news of terrorists’ attacks, America responds by saying, “These people, these tyrants, aren’t going to suddenly stop being violent. If you give them power, they’re going to be a thousand times worse. So fight. However you can, fight” (Cass 70). Through the empowering words, America impacts the entire kingdom to protect themselves. She has a remarkable capability to understand that actions must be taken to affect the situation positively. Along with this example, America demonstrates her desire by saying, “I’m not just going to sit here… I’m going, and we’re wasting time” (Cass 99) later in the book. Within the quote, we see America’s persistence. She is unwilling to give up her opportunity to assist, even with the perils embedded.
