Ludwig van Beethoven was a composer during the Classical and Romantic time periods. He was born in Bonn, Germany in 1770 to a family of musicians. Three generations of his family were employed at the court of Electorate of Cologne in Bonn as musicians. Ludwig van Beethoven, known as Louis, who was Beethoven’s grandfather was highly admired in the electoral chapel because of his abilities as a musician and his character. Louis married Maria Josepha Poll and had only one surviving child , Johann van Beethoven, in 1746. Johann made a living off of teaching piano, violin and singing. He also entered the electors in 1752 as a boy soprano then later became a tenor. In 1772, Johann married Maria Magdalena and had their first kid named Ludwig Maria, she only lived for six days. Johann and Maria had six children, only three of which survived early childhood. The other two children who did not survive were Anna Maria and Franz George. The other three survivors were Ludwig van Beethoven, Caspar Anton Carl and Nikolaus Johann. The two children Caspar Anton Carl and Nikolaus Johann played important roles in Beethoven’s life.

He did not have too many duties, which left time for composing and music development. He traveled to Vienna in the spring of 1787, though there was little documentation, it is believed that he met Mozart and got instruction while there. After two weeks, he went back to Bonn because his Mother’s health slowly becoming worse and more life threatening. His mother died in July of that same year.
