Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany on December 17 or 16, 1770. Records are not sure if he was born on those days, but it does show that he was baptized on the 17th.The law and customs back then were babies were baptized within 24 hours of birth. Beethoven accidently believed that he was born two years later, in 1772 and he got very upset when people would say that he was born in 1770. His family originated from Brabant, in Belgium. His father, Johann van Beethoven was a musician at the court of Bonn. His father also was an alcoholic and was typically very angry and upset. His mother Maria, Magdalena van Beethoven did not have a job and was always described as a gentle woman with a warm heart. Beethoven often called his mother his “best friend”. When his father found out that he was very talented he envisioned creating a new Mozart, a child prodigy. On March 26th 1778, Beethoven gave his first performance in Cologne. His father announced that he was 6 years-old. Because of this Beethoven always thought that he was younger than he actually was. His father was just drunk and did not know old he actually was. The music and teaching of his father were limited. Soon he learned music, notably the organ and composition by renowned musician Gottlob Neefe. Neefe recognized how out of this world talented Beethoven and not only did Neefe teach him music, but he made the philosophers known to him as well. In 1782, before he turned 12, Beethoven his first piece of music, 9 Variations in C Minor for piano on a march by Earnest Christoph Dressler.
