Carli #15 The Beatles were a very popular band in the 1960s. The band consisted of 4 people, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Richard Starkey (Ringo Starr). The band started in 1960, but started their path to fame in 1962. How did they become famous so fast? When The Beatles first started, they would only play gigs in Liverpool, England. Eventually, Brian Epstein, took notice of them. Epstein’s family owned the furniture/record store, NEMS. Then, in January of 1962, Epstein officially became their manager. The Beatles finally earned a recording session with EMI-Parlophone, but their original drummer, Pete Best, had to go because he didn’t have the talent to stay in the group. The band then asked Ringo Starr, the drummer of Rory Storm and the Hurricanes to join the band, to which he accepted. When the band broke through the charts with their single, “Love Me Do”, they started to rise to the top of fame. A classical music critic even declared them “the greatest composers since Beethoven”. They instantly started becoming famous because when they released their first album, people noticed that they sounded incredibly different from all the other bands. Most of the music at the time sounded the same. Their appearances were also incredibly different. They had longer hair than what was known, their signature hairstyle was called the “moptop”. Because their music wasn’t only getting noticed in England, they ended up charting 20 number 1 singles in the U.S., two more than runner up, Elvis Presley.
