The most important thing about the battle at Fort Sumter is it was the first shots fired upon the union in the Civil War. Fort Sumter is “a man-made island that stands in the middle of Charleston Harbour”.(battlefeilds.org) Fort Sumter was “surrounded by confederate bases and stood alone in the middle of the harbour”(notebook pg 42). This is important because it shows the struggle it was to keep this base running, as well as how hard it must be to transport the solders materials in a time of war; not only is it surrounded by enemy bases, but surrounded by water.
