Beginning in 1920 America become dry thanks to the efforts of the Women’s Temperance Union and from the influence of women like Carrie Nation. Their goal was to get rid of what they believed was the sole factor in what destroyed marriages and families. On January 16, 1919 Congress passed the 18th Amendment, which made the buying, selling, and the production of “intoxicating liquors” to be illegal.
