Why Should Huck Finn Be Banned

The novel Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, published in 1884. Huckleberry Finn is still one of the most controversial books in the US because of its language. Huck Finn uses the word “nigger” 219 times written in the novel. However, twain does not use this word against African Americans, he uses it to giver purpose of the book, and that is the conflicts of racism and slavery in early America. Many Americans want to just ban the book from school curriculums, because it may cause students to feel uncomfortable. However, the time associated issues of the book are an iconic part of American History and should not be banned or censored in schools.
CBS News gives great insight to the debate on if Huck Finn should be censored. A reporter named, Bryon Pitts was asked to interview people on the subject. He interviewed teachers at Woodbury High School, and they read the original book. However, one teacher Nora Wise says the word “nigger” but the other teacher Karen morril does not. Nora Wise talked about how she uses the word in class just to see her class’s reactions. Wise said “It makes sense in this novel to teach it with the controversy. It makes sense to bring up all of the hard emotions. They come with it. It's not just a classic book. It's not just the way the words are

It teaches people how life was in early America. By leaving the book the way it is, it gives a taste to how black people were treated, and how far America has come as a country. Twain does not use racial slurs to discriminate, he uses them to catch peoples attention and to make a point. He was just opening the eyes to Americans at the time. No man deserves to be treated like an animal no matter the skin color. This is a lesson that can still be taught in modern day classrooms, it is not right to treat someone bad because they are different, and instead treat others the way you would want to be
