Why We Should Have Shot Lennie's Death

In John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, George shoots a guy named Lennie in the back of the head. George is the caregiver of Lennie, and Lennie is not the brightest person. After Lennie killed Curley’s wife, he went south to go hide in the bush and wait for George. George, who stole Carlson’s gun, went to go find Lennie. Once he found Lennie, George told Lennie that he was not mad at him and then shot him in the back of the head. George was right to have shot Lennie because Lennie could have killed or hurt more people, and he was going to get shot anyway by Curley. One reason George should have killed Lennie is because Lennie could have either killed or hurt more people. George says, “I guess we gotta get ‘im up an’ lock ‘im up. We can’t let ‘im get away” (Steinbeck 94). George wanted to get Lennie before he can do more things that are dangerous. Also, George says, “Lennie never done it in meanness. All the time he done bad things, but he never done one of ‘em mean” (Steinbeck 95). George explains to Candy that all the things that Lennie had done were not mean to him. However, since George was Lennie’s friend, he wanted to make it less painful than Curley shooting him multiple times. Curley says, “I’m gonna get him. I’m going for my shotgun. I’ll kill the big jerk myself” (Steinbeck 96). Curly just found his wife died and made an inference that Lennie did it, so he got really agitated at him. Furthermore, Curley says, “I’m gonna shoot the guts outta that big jerk myself, even if I only got one hand. I’m gonna get ‘im” (Steinbeck 98).
