Introduction This story is a short story by African American writer ZZ Packer. Through the eyes of a young African American child in a girls scout troop, she narrates the tale. She depicts the emotional toll that the civil rights movement took on African Americans and how, as a result of their upbringing, the current generation of kids grows up with the same hatred towards the outside world.
