Imagine you’re living a peaceful life, then one day, strange people come and hardships start striking. That’s what it was like for the Native Americans. This group of indigenous people suffered much throughout their lives, specifically when Europeans came to take their land. Native Americans had little advantage from this new group of people. These indigenous groups suffered hardships from the Europeans because of diseases, lack of weapons and warfare, and refusing to convert to Catholicism. Although there were many ways that Native Americans suffered, one way was through disease. As the Europeans traveled to the Americas, they brought over much sickness. When Europeans took power they brought “guns and steel to parts of Africa” and introduced them to the Americas (World Civilizations p. 808). With the lack of weapons, “not even. shields could defend.” the indigenous people (Doc 3). Native Americans used arrows, shields, “hatchets (and other weapons)” (Bruce E. p. 25). However, their weapons were ineffective because the other side had horses and swords. Everything the native Americans learned previously, didn’t work. They lost to the Europeans because their weapons weren’t good enough. Lastly, indigenous people were forced to convert to Catholicism. Europeans believed that native Americans were misguided, they “set out to convert people to their religion” using harmful methods (World Civilizations, 808). They treated the Native Americans with lots of “ murder, brutality, and pillage” (Youtube, Crash Course). In document 5, you see the Europeans trying to force people to be Catholic. They would hang them and burn them as torture. The Europeans would not and could not accept any other religion in their new land.
