Client rights are very important before the counselor starts any kind of services. By providing client rights to the client it informs them about their rights during treatment. According to Lecture 4 “Client rights is a broad construct that includes a variety of legal and ethical rights that are defined and protected in statutes, rules and professional code of conduct governing the behavior of professional counselor.” So, a counselor needs to have a consent that has five principles which are autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice and fidelity. The five principles are important because the client needs to be aware of their rights and they can make a decision if they agree with the rights or not. It is very important to have autonomy in the client rights because it gives the client his full right to determine what they want to do with their life. Nonmaleficence is important in the client rights because the counselor will do no harm to the client in anyway. Beneficence is letting the client aware that they counselor will do the best at all times with no conflict. Justice is very important to be part of the client rights because it is letting the client aware that the counselor will be fair at all times. When a client is starting services they need to be aware of fidelity before any rights. Fidelity lets the client know that the counselor is someone they can trust and have confidence in. An example of fidelity can be if the client is having trust issues and does not want to open up because he/she had bad experience in the past.
