In A Separate Peace by John Knowles, Finny, a student, learns that he cannot trust anyone. Placed at Devon, a boarding school, four teenage boys. Leper, Finny, Brinker, and Gene become good friends. The boys met through sharing the same bunks at school and having the same classes. Every day, they all meet to go to their favorite place, the lofty tree. At the tree, they take turns jumping off the apex limb into the water. Brinker and Finny are jocks at Devon, who are the two that are good at sports. On the other hand, Leper and Gene are the two smart people out of the group. Finny likes to make fun of Gene for always studying and doing his homework. After a while, Gene gets mad at Finny and wants to make him quit. One day, Finny decides that he wants to skip class to jump off the tree instead. He asks Gene and Leper to go along with him. They do. When they show up to the tree, Finny starts climbing the notches right away. Gene gets an idea as he watches Finny climb the tree. Gene asks Finny if all three of them could jump off of the tree together. Leper thinks that this is a bad idea, but daring Finny thinks it is a great idea. …show more content…
A few moments later, there is a big crashing noise in the hallway. Gene runs out of the room and finds Finny lying motionless at the bottom of a flight of marbled stairs. As Gene calls for help, the hallway starts to fill up. Soon after, the nurse shows up and lifts Finny into a chair. The chair gets taken to an office, where they do a check up on Finny. After this, Finny discovers that he has re broken his leg and will need surgery to fix the fractures. Gene waits impatiently in the office for Finny to get out of the operating room. When Gene sees the doctor walking into the office, he knows that something is wrong. The doctor tells Gene that Finny has died. Gene soon starts to feel guilty and blames himself for everything. In the end, Finny discovers that people change over
