“Spiritual leadership expert Laura Reave reviewed more than 150 studies and found a correlation between spiritual values and leader effectiveness.” (Hackman & Johnson, 2013, p. 395) She also found that there are 5 spiritual practices that a leader can institute to be more effective. In reviewing those 5 practices I find each of them valuable and each have a biblical foundation from which to apply them.
1. Treating others fairly. Fairness is an outcome of viewing others with respect, an important tenet in most belief systems and spiritual paths. (Hackman & Johnson, 2013, p. 395) In Matt. 7:12 (New International Version) Jesus says, “ So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” The very foundation of the Christian walk is about treating others fairly and should be evident in all aspects of our daily

Expressing caring and concern. Spirituality often takes the form of supportive behavior. (Hackman & Johnson, 2013, p. 395) Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. (Eph. 4:32) God so loved the world… (John 3:16) Jesus cared enough for us to die for us, our lives and actions should be demonstrative to others that we operate in that same love and caring for our fellow man.
3. Listening responsively. Listening and responding to the needs of others is another practice endorsed by many spiritual traditions. (Hackman & Johnson, 2013, p. 395) Hebrews 4:15 states that we have a high priest (Jesus) who can empathize with because he has been tempted in every way. Showing empathy is critical to listening as it helps to identify with the one speaking.
4. Appreciating the contributions of others. Most of the world’s faiths view people as creations of God (or some other powerful force) who are worthy of praise. (Hackman & Johnson, 2013, p. 396) There are many verses that speak to appreciation here are a few of my favorites 1TIM 2:1-15, 1Thes 5:11, 1Peter
