How 'A Wrinkle In Time' Is Revolutionary!

Instagram has been abuzz with promotional material for the upcoming film ‘A Wrinkle in Time’, starring Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon. The film, which is directed by Ava DuVernay, tells the story of Meg (Storm Reid) and her little brother, Charles (Deric McCabe) who go on a quest to find their father (Chris Pine).

Before the most recent film, which is due out in March [of 2018], there was another version of the film released in 2003, which started an almost entirely white cast. However, the 2003 film was met with negative reviews. The story also followed a female character named Meg, however, there were differences where Meg’s parents had different names.

The new A Wrinkle in Time is revolutionary for a number of reasons. From the diverse casting choices to the choice of writer and director, A Wrinkle in Time is definitely one of the ages and for the film slate of 2018.

When it comes to the behind-the-scenes factors of the writing of the screenplay, the film was written by someone Disney fans will know quite well: Jennifer Lee, the screenwriter of Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, and Frozen Fever. Lee is also well known as a female director in Animation, having co-directed Frozen and the associated short, Frozen Fever alongside animation legend Chris Buck. Not to mention, Lee also was credited with ‘Story by’ on Zootopia.

Having a female director in Ava DuVernay and a female screenwriter involved with a massive blockbuster like this goes to show that women are more capable of directing 100-million dollar blockbusters then their male counterparts. They add a much more balanced environment for their cast and crew which isn’t ruled by the power of the male
