As a young child born to a conservative Nigerian Christian family, I had always been fascinated with clinical neuroscience. In the traditional African environment that I grew up in, many of my close relatives and friends did not believe that mental and neurological disorders had a physical and scientific explanation behind them. In fact, many of them believed that most of these disorders could be explained as a result of a spiritual problem, a common Nigerian superstition. My interest in this area really developed at the age of 13, when I was told that someone close to me was suffering from chronic depression. Since that time, I have been drawn to understanding the neurological basis behind many of the mental disorders and diseases that are rampant in today’s modern society. Benton Harbor is a predominantly African American Community. At the conservative Christian university that I attend, it is commonly referred to as the “local mission field”. During my time at this clinic, I became more familiar and aware of the struggles that people in this area faced. The clinic has a food bank connected to it, and I had the opportunity of leading a patient to the food bank. During that time, he told me about how he met the Doctor I was working with, Dr. Tynes. According to the patient, he had met Dr. Tynes during the period of time that he was homeless. He described how Dr. Tynes went above and beyond his expectations and assisted him in all the ways that he was able to. The patient’s story made a significant impact on me. Although, I had always had an interest to work with underserved communities it was solidified in that
