Remarque’s approach in writing All Quiet on The Western Front was one that had revolutionized the way society thought about war. As war novels before World War I romanticized war, emphasized patriotic duty, glory and honor while Remarque’s novel emphasizes and delivers the realities of war such as the horrors, its effects on soldiers and the troops camaraderie towards each other. As prevalent as brutality is during war, World War I truly stimulated a more gruesome picture of war that was never perceived before. Bombs falling out of the sky piercing sounds of shells going off, leaving soldiers with “completely smashed hip bones, knees and shoulders” many of whom would not even survive throughout the night (Remarque 263). The sufferings of these
