Think about losing one of your freedoms that you have in your everyday life, and imagine what life would be like without that freedom, now take away all of your freedom and that is what everyday life is like for a boy named Jonas. The book, The Giver, by Lois Lowry is a very interesting book because it demonstrates a lifestyle from a society what is very different from what you and I are used to.
The memories the Giver shares with Jonas provides Jonas with knowledge that helps him form opinions. Jonas realizes that his community lacks beauty because of the fear of pain. For example, “the hardest part of holding in the memories is not the pain, it’s not being able to share them.” This shows that Jonas dislikes not being able to share his training with his family or friends. This also shows that he strongly dislikes not sharing his memories. Another example of a time when Jonas dislikes the knowledge that comes with the memories is when he said, “It’s just without the memories it is all meaningless.” What this means is that for a society to function in a proper way, everyone must have

One time this is shown is when the Giver gave Jonas the memory of the sled, Jonas said, “There are no words that can describe the feeling.” What the main idea of this quote is is that Jonas has never felt anything like it and he may even wish his society was like this memory. This is important because it showed Jonas enjoyed going down the snow-covered hill and he became curious of why his community wasn’t like this memory. Jonas like of the memories was made clear another time when the narrator said, “He was free to express the heartless glee that overwhelmed him.” The main idea of this is that Jonas was so amazed at how life was and that he was almost speechless.
