World in Danger Humans have been inventing tings throughout history. Recently these inventions needed the burning of fossil fuels to power them. Burning the fuel releases carbon dioxide into the air, warming the Earth’s surface. The global warming is weakening plants and animals all over the Earth. World leaders should sign a binding agreement to lessen the effects of global warming because it may save the world from devastation. Signing a binding agreement may help the environment, but countries just beginning to industrialize would have to help reduce the green house gasses even though they’re not responsible for it. Countries’, such as those in the middle-east, economy that relies heavily on the sale of oils would affected a lot. Their jobs would be lost and people would need to be retrained. Kyoto Protocol has asked the world to work together and help reduce the emission of green house gases. Not all the countries agreed to help. In fact, the United States of America, one of the leading countries emitting carbon dioxide and other harmful gasses didn’t participate (Kyoto). Bush, who was president at that time, had turned down the request because the Kyoto Protocol cost too much and would also make many people lose their jobs. He said that America would help reduce green house gas emissions on their own promising to cut sulfur dioxide emissions by 73% and nitrogen oxides by 67% (Bush). The United Nations has a big role in reducing the effects of global warming. However, in the Charter of the United Nations Chapter IX: International Economic And Social Co-Operation, Article 55, “higher standards of living, full employment, and conditions of economic and social progress and development.” The United Nations is also responsible for keeping world peace and world order. What is green house effect? It’s the extra heat from the sun trapped on the Earth’s surface due to the increased amount of green house gasses in the air. Heat and light from the sun is shined onto Earth. Some is reflected and the rest is absorbed. Some of the reflected heat is absorbed by green house gasses. This becomes extra, unwanted heat. So far, the average temperature of the Earth’s surface has increased by 0.74°C and is expected to increase by 1.8°C to 4.0°C over the next few years (The Greenhouse). Around the world in places such as Asia, Antarctica, and the North have giant glaciers. Trapped heat from the sun has warmed even the behemoths of blocks of ice, causing them to melt.
