Career Fair Reflection

1. This semester was the first career fair I had participated in and it seemed very overwhelming. In order to be prepared to speak with potential employers, I went over the PowerPoint and elevator speech outlines to get a gist of the things that might be essential to say. I navigated through the career service website and found a list of all companies who would be at the career fair and revised my resume and altered my objective statement to fit the employers I wanted to speak with. A few hours before the career fair, I practiced my elevator speech and came up with a few questions to ask in order to get the information I needed most. The last finishing touches were to print copies of my resume, get a portfolio together with paper to take notes, and dress professionally.
2. At the career fair I spoke with a total of 4 different companies including both medical and food science related positions. I began with Walgreens where I spoke with a representative on potential opportunities there might be in shadowing a pharmacist in the local area. Although she was unable to give me specifics on who to speak directly to, she guided me to visit their website and stop by local pharmacies where I could get more detailed information on when and if they allow students to shadow. One thing I realized after attending the career fair was the personal significance of networking and speaking with individuals who are a part of a company and how much it means to know someone inside rather than going in blindly. Being able to say you someone recommended you or someone you have spoken with works in the company gives you an upper hand over those who may not know anyone and do not have connections within a company. Overall, I believe my career fair experience was a success and I hope to follow up with the individuals I spoke with and have an internship or a shadowing program to participate in this
