Maria
1.What is Maria’s most likely diagnosis? Maria has most likely developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful condition that effects a persons fingers and hands. It can be caused by compression of a nerve in the wrist. This occurs over time from repetitive movements in the wrist or from the body retaining fluid in the wrists. The symptoms include the numbness and tingling in the hands and fingers like Maria was feeling.
2.Related to the diagnosis, what would be the cause of Maria’s symptoms? Explain the mechanism. For Maria, her Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is most likely from hyper flexing her wrist for long periods of time while typing on her blog. When Maria types on her computer she flexes her wrist which entraps the median nerve. This causes the nerve irritation and swelling and ultimately the numbness and tingling in her fingers and aching pain in her wrists.
3.List and describe a treatment option for Maria.

She will be told to rest and ice her wrist. Her primary care physician may tell her to wear wrist braces to keep from furthering the irritation to her nerves. The wrist braces will keep her wrists in a straight relaxed position-this keeps the median nerve from becoming entrapped. If the problem gets worse or long term damage has occurred she may suggest cortisone steroid injections.
