Jamestown was a colony started by men and boys from England in 1607. Nearly 90% of all the people at Jamestown died in a period of we now call “The Starving Time”. Was starvation the cause of death for all these people, or did a combination of things kill the settlers? I think disease killed a majority of the settlers at Jamestown, because there was many diseases that they weren’t immune to.
The colonists that settled at Jamestown were immune to many diseases they had in England. But when they came to America there were many deadly diseases that they contracted. The colonists wastes would go into the river, so when the current wasn’t strong enough the wastes would stay near the camp. When the colonist went to get water to drink the wastes would go into their bodies and they would contract Typhoid Fever. There

Scientists think that this poison is the reason for many of the deaths at Jamestown. Could there have been people in America that wanted revenge on the colonists? Just as a crew was sent back to England many men became sick. This wave of sickness throughout the colony brought suspicion to the people. Recent studies that have been conducted have shown that there is a possible way that people could have invaded the camp and poisoned the water supply to hurt many people in the town all at once. If the water had been poisoned is could have accounted for the deaths because they all had to have water to survive. Even though all the people had to drink water to stay alive I don’t think that deliberate poisoning can account for all of the deaths that happened at Jamestown in 1609-1610.
So what did kill all of the colonists at Jamestown? Was is just one theory, or a combination of all the theories. Even though disease could not have accounted for all of the deaths at Jamestown, I think that it accounted for a majority of them. That’s how I think the colonist at Jamestown
