In 1606 King James I set a royal charter, an English joint stock company, by the name of the Virginia Company, to set up colonial settlements in North America. On the year 1607 the Virginia Company set out on three different ships: the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery, with members of 144 boys and men. This was to establish an English colony. Their voyage led them to Jamestown Island. This settlement is dated as the first permanently colonization in North America from the English. The earliest colonists struggled from the start, they were faced with many problems upon their arrival, scarce food, diseases and conflicts including those with the Native Americans.

But then they heard that there was a fleet coming. Coming in that fleet was a new governor, and supplies, the survivors decided to head back to Jamestown. In 1612, Jamestown started to turn into a beneficial land for the colonists. Tobacco started to be planted on the land to provide investments. Following this, was the marriage of Pocahontas and tobacco grower John Rolfe which brought some peace to Jamestown.
Peace didn’t last long for the settlers, the chief of the Powhatan at that time was tired and in rage that the English were still there. He devised a plan against the settlers and attacked, many settlers died. After this the Indians stood back to let the English pack up and go but instead they attacked back, this fight lasted many years. (War and Peace with Powhatan People,1) During the fight King James I had taken the charter away from the Virginia Company because they brought financial hardships.
The English colonists didn’t stop facing hardships till the day Jamestown was no longer a town. Coming to a new place can be difficult and as one can see the colonists had to sacrifice plenty in order to succeed in this new land. The English colonists did not have it easy, many of them were infected with diseases, starved, and were even killed by the Powhatan Indians.
