During the Modern Era, Europeans were empire building in the Americas, carrying over and changing some characteristics of their Russian, Chinese, Mughal, and Ottoman counterparts. Western Europe greatly expanded within the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, conquering empires not only across a vast amount of land but over the Atlantic ocean as well. Empires created in the Americas were known as colonies which resembled Russian, Chinese, Mughal, and Ottoman counterparts. However, these empires had some different aspects as well. European empires were similar to their counterparts because they were all imperialistic. For instance, Russia expanded its empire over two different continents, being the largest empire during the modern era.
