During the late eighteenth century, the American Revolution was not the only revolution occurring. Across the globe, the Haitian and French Revolutions were major revolutions that were occurring. Although these revolutions were different from the American Revolution, they were similar in many ways. These revolutions have impacted the political landscape in today's society. The French Revolution, lasting from 1789-1799, was a period marked by social and political upheaval in France. The American Revolution, bankruptcy of France, and political inequality throughout France, were all catalysts behind the Revolution. French citizens “razed and redesigned their country’s political landscape, uprooting centuries-old institutions such as absolute monarchy and the feudal system”(“French Revolution”). Like the American Revolution, the French Revolution was “influenced by Enlightenment ideals, particularly the concepts of popular sovereignty and inalienable right”(“French Revolution”). The cause of the Haitian Revolution was the cruelty of slavery and the desire for blacks to be treated equal. The French Revolution also inspired Haitians that were enslaved to rise up and rebel against the white system of slavery. The Haitian Revolution is similar to the American Revolution, because both revolutions were influenced by the Enlightenment. The Haitian Revolution differed from the American Revolution, because their goals were different. The Haitians rebelled against the cruelty of slavery and the American Revolution started because the British rule was unfair. The outcome of the Haitian Revolution, was that slavery had ended and the French no longer had control over the colony.
