The three colonial american regions had different economic characteristics which developed into contrasting economies. The New England region, for example, had harsh winters and fertile yet, rocky soil. But the coast was laced with bays and harbors, therefore, they relied on trading, shipbuilding, and whaling industries rather than agriculture. The middle colonies, in contrast, had a diverse climate and very clear and fertile soil. This incites farming in the middle colonies.
