According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, “Coming-of-age” refers to the time when a person becomes an adult. Most stories do have a character that grows up or develops a better personality or a better lifestyle over the course of the story. As we have read throughout the semester we see characters in these stories change and grow over the course of their experiences. The process of personal development and maturing is obvious in the main characters of the stories The Secret Garden, Charlotte’s Web, Tuck Everlasting, and A Bridge To Teribithia. In the end of these stories we can compare from the start to the end how these characters have changed because of what they go through in the novel. The Secret Garden shows the main characters Mary Lennox and Colin Craven both influence each other to grow up especially because they are so similar. Fern Arable is the daughter of the farm owner who rescues Wilbur from being killed with an ax. Fern starts the story vowing to take care of Wilbur after she saves him and turns out to interact very well with the other animals. Regardless what her family says about it, Fern insists that she is talking to the animals and that they are communicating back. Fern represents the most common come of age story when it comes to teenage girls because she starts to grow up and lean away from what she grew up with but her interest in boys sky rocketed and her love for animals decreased. The story of Wilbur is a coming of age story because he goes from having that one person to rely on to having to make new friends and take care of himself. Wilbur reminds me of a child actually becoming an adult and moving away from their parents for the first time, like a teenager moving into college.
