Confederate Flag Research Paper

Humanity as a whole has an awful way of stereotyping others. Today, we relate conservatives as the superior and rich Caucasian people. Whereas, liberals are viewed as poor low-class minorities or Caucasians. The color of one’s skin should not define who they are or what political party they should belong to. Mrs. Wright is an African-American woman who is a republican that disbelieved that the confederate flag stands for heritage. To her, the displaying of confederate flags is a representation of slavery, a problem that was supposed to be abolished many years ago. The flag to John Lewis represents “a dark past as a symbol of separation, a symbol of division, and a symbol of hate” (Jennifer Steinhauer and Johnathan Weisman). Displaying the southern pride and heritage flag is similar to saying one is supportive of slavery. Most inferior minorities associate the confederate flag as a sign of racism, while the superior whites do not. The confederate flag may have started off as a symbol of succession, but it developed into showing America that whites will always be superior. Wrights explains some flags represent good, including the American flag which symbolizes our country’s pride. We associate the American flag with independence and freedom. It was well put together and arranged by stars and strips of different colors, each meaning something different from the other. Everywhere a person goes they will see the American flag whether it be a school, store, or bank. Through the American flag we can be sure that America is “one nation, under God.” We recite the pledge of allegiance while looking at the flag to remind ourselves of the liberties that we have.
