While the Articles of Confederation had some positive outcomes, it ultimately failed (Schultz, 2010). Therefore, the constitution was a better solution. Established in 1777, the Articles of Confederation defined the sovereignty of the colonies. Thus, the ratification process began the following year. Moreover, because all of the states had to agree to the ratification, it did not finally go into effect until 1781.
The positive outcomes from the Articles of Confederation were that it limited government authority, provided qualifying members of the nation with equal rights, all while assisting with the organization of the new lands obtained in the west (Schultz, 2010). However, the failures of the Articles outweighed the benefits it provided.
