There has been very much disagreement over the years about how to teach children in public schools. The argument has always been about if schools should encourage students to be more individual or teach them how to conform to society. Students tend to want as much freedom as possible when it comes to everything, schedules, dress code, and even that teachers they have. But is it really best for the student if they have all of this choice? In modern society success is often hand and hand with conformity. To do well in society you have to follow by certain rules. Therefore because of this schools should encourage conformity, and one of the first ways they should do this is through a strict dress code.

Source G shows the list of expectations that a student must abide by in school. These are very much like traditional laws in society. Students have to arrive to class at a certain time, follow certain rules and very often have little choice in the matter. As shown in source C, we even teach kids at a very young age how to be prepared for certain standardized, or mandated tests. They do these things for an important reason, society tends to be very structured. Jobs start at certain times and if you aren’t there at those times you can get in serious trouble. In fact, if someone goes out of the structure of society they could get in serious trouble. For example with the dress codes, people cannot wear whatever they want out in public. You can’t just go to a walmart completely buck naked without getting in serious trouble. By keeping strict dress codes in schools, they are teaching children that you cannot wear whatever you want without consequences. While the consequences in school are much different than what would happen if you got a public indecency charge the same principle is there. The dispute between schools promoting individuality or conformity is a never ending topic. Overall, schools should support conformity specifically in dress code because it is preparing children for living in a democratic and structured society. Without schools promoting this kind of conformity, especially through dress code, students would be wholly unprepared for adult
