Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday that is celebrated throughout Mexico, and certain Central and South regions. The holiday celebrates and honors the spirits of loved ones that have passed on. It is a daylong remembrance filled with gifts, food, and tons of decorations.
Mictlan was the origin place of the Day of the Dead. It is named after Mictlantecuhtli, the god living in the underworld. They came to the Altar the location for which people place their offerings to the dead. It is filled with food, flowers, candles and can be set up at many places like a school. Calavera de azucar, or sugar skulls, are candies made for children. Pan de muerto “bread of the dead” is a special bread made to be placed on an altar and eaten with coffee or hot choclate. It is often eaten with coffee or hot chocolate.
La Catrina, is a female skeleton character created by Jose Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913) to act as social commentary. She later became an important figure in Day of the Dead celebrations. Angelitos is the Spanish word for the young children that have already passed away. The word translated means “little angel.”
