Female Mill Workers in England and Japan: How Similar Were Their Experiences? Before the 19th century women were not able to work. During the 19th century women in England and Japan worked in mills. Even though they were able to work they were not treated well. The mills in England and Japan were more similar than different because of the hours/wages, workers demographics, and working conditions. In England and Japan their hours/wages were more similar than different. In Japan the workers experienced more than eleven hours a day working in the mills with only ten to fifteen minute breakfast and lunch breaks. In document E it says, “ … a normal working day in a plant in Okaya was thirteen to fourteen hours… given fifteen minutes for breakfast.”
