During and after the war, African Americans were being treated below the implied standard of equality that the Declaration of Independence had promised and even the creation of such a document embodied characteristics of hypocrisy. This hypocrisy is a derivation of Lord Dunmore’s Proclamation, which was a call to arms mainly directed towards African American slaves owned by the colonists to join Britain’s army (Document 1). The incentive of obeying this order was the promise of freedom, and thus equality, which is exactly what the Declaration of Independence had guaranteed—however, Lord Dunmore’s Proclamation had preceded the Declaration. It signifies that the equality which the Declaration had championed was absent for African American slaves,
