Often in sermons ministers persuades their audience to behave in a spiritual or more fashion. Such is the case in sinners in the hands of an angry god by Jonathan Edwards where he says all sinners should repent their sins or burn in the external pit of hell Edward wanted to impact his audience by appealing to their fears, pity, and vanity. Edwards had a negative impact on his Puritan audience because of his use of vexed, tone, disturbing imagery, and figurative language. Edwards has a vexed tone. A shown in paragraph 8 it stated “It is a great furnace of wrath, a wide and bottomless pit, full of fire if the wrath that you are held over in the hand of that God whose wrath is provoked and incensed as much against you against many of the damned …show more content…
For instance, in paragraph 1 he said “Cast his enemies down to hell”. This quote clearly shows an Edwards purpose to finish the sinner by showing God’s power to take the sinner out. Also disturbing is his picture in paragraph 6 of the sinner being “Swallowed up in the everlasting destruction”. This shows an everlasting hell for the sinner who doesn’t repent.
Moreover, Edwards’s figurative language is also disturbing, according to the quote in paragraph 6 which states “The bow of God’s wrath is bent”. This quote shows that gods bow, which symbolize God’s anger that can bring a great deal of pain to the sinner who doesn’t repent. In addition, in paragraph 6 this quote “This quote “Justice directs the bow to your heart” Shows that the sinner’s heart is guilty of many things so when God feel the sinner’s time has arrived then he will strike the sinner’s heart.
To conclude Jonathan Edwards where he says all the sinners should repent of their sins or burn in the external pit of hell Edward wanted to impact his audience by appealing to their fears, pity and vanity.
