An electrolyte is a substance that has the ability to conduct electricity by disassociating its ions in a solution. An ion that is positively charged is known as a cation and a negatively charged ion is known as an anion.Examples of these substances consist of sodium, potassium, chloride and calcium. They are distributed around our body randomly so this allows for vital metabolic reactions to take place. These are commonly tested by doctors and electrolyte replacement is required when an individual suffers from excessive vomiting or diarrhoea. They are also monitored with those who suffer from bulimia and anorexia as some bulimia patients can trigger self-induced vomiting which can lead to electrolyte replacements.
