“Night” Theme Essay
One of the main themes of the book “Night” is Eliezer Wiesel faith in God and losing it. This theme is shown from the beginning to they end. Wiesel view of religion changes dramatically throughout the book. He has been through many horrible things that made him reevaluate ate his full belief in God. Wiesel believed in God, to witnessing terrible thing to slowly change his faith, to losing his once loved religion.
Wiesel started to lean and believe in God. “By day I studied Talmud and by night I would run to synagogue to weep over the destruction of the temple... “Never shall I forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed into smoke under a slight sky. Never shall I forget those flames that consumed my faith forever.” (34) This part of the book is where Wiesel seemed to lose the most faith in God. After he saw this he had trouble believing in a God who is supposed to protect not destroy. His belief in God slowly began to fade away.
Wiesel is starting to lose God while others are trying to hold on. “Some of the men spoke of God: His mysterious ways, the sins of the Jewish people, and the redemption to come. As for me, I had ceased to pray… I was not denying his absolute justice.” (45) Wiesel starts to rebel against God by not praying and not caring anymore. Wiesel thought there was a God out there, but he could not handle the fact that many innocent lives are dying and God is not saving or helping them. He was starting to lose a big part of him his religion.
The theme of the book “Night” is how Wiesel believed strongly in his religio to losing faith in all. Wiesel witnessed a terrible way of death that shaped his religious views. Wiesel went through the Holocaust, which tested his faithfulness toward God. He had loved God with all his heart, but once the unspeakable happened, he had lost trust for what he cared so much
