My grandmother loved to cook during the holiday season. She would call up all her two kids: my dad and aunt, and tell them to gather up the family for Sunday dinner because she was “throwing down in the kitchen”. She enjoyed getting the family together for a big feast; I think she just liked to hear everyone tell her how good her cooking was. Her favorite meal to cook was Thanksgiving dinner. But this holiday season was different. The phone calls became far and few in between and the Sunday dinners were slim to none. “Hey mom, have you heard from Grandma?” I asked in a worried tone, “Yeah what’s up with the Sunday dinners?” questioned my brother, She responded nonchalantly, “Um yeah, I spoke with her not to long ago.”

I didn’t quite understand all the appointments, they came as a surprise because my grandmother was such a healthy senior, she was active, buoyant and loved her life. I went along with the excuse but, there was obviously something else going on.
Thanksgiving drew closer and there was no talk of an immense, intricate, and intimate dinner at Grandma’s. There was no talk about Grandma at all. I can remember my dad inviting my aunt and all of my cousins over to the house one Saturday afternoon; and usually we would all gather around in the family den and watch TV, talk and play games.
This time was different. This time the look on my aunt’s face wasn’t so pleasant, it was more somber and dark. This time all the kids were shuffled upstairs and into one room. This time the family get together left me uneasy.
All I could think was,
Why were we all being ushered upstairs? Why couldn’t we sit together like we always did? Why has everything been so secretive
