"What Does the American Flag Represent?" The American Flag represents many things, physically and symbolically. Phyiscally, the stars represent the fifty United States. The stripes, when counted, stand for the original thirteen colonies from the early days of America. The red stripes stand for hardiness and valors, the white stripes stand for purity and innocence, and the blue on the flag represents vigilance, perserverance, and justice. The history of the flag has no determined beginning, or even an original creator determined, but it is believed that Jersey Congressman Francis Hopkinson and sewn by American Seamstress Betsy Ross. William Driver was a sea captain from Massachusetts. His flag survived multiple attempts to deface it during the Civil War. Once the war was over in 1865, William flew his flag over the Tennessee State House. To many people, the flag also stands for our freedom. The freedom that started in 1783, when British troops surrendered to American troops in Yorktown and two years when they signed the Treaty of Paris. A freedom that was challenged in 1861, when the country was divided into 'Union' and 'Confederacy'. A freedom that fought alongside others in 1914, when new foreign threats emerged in Europe. A freedom that fought dictators in Europe in 1939, when Hitler, Mussolini and Tojo rose to power. A freedom that no one can take away.
