Power is basically how much people follow after a person, or the ability to influence others behavior. Mayella Ewell is a racist and prejeduce woman who says Tom RObinson, a black man, rapes her and has no proof. Because of her class and gender, Mayella is powerless, but her race makes her powerful. Even though Mayella Ewell is white, she is also a lower class. “ Maycomb’s Ewells lived behind the town garbage dump in what was once negro cabin…(Doc.A).” This shows how poor the Ewells are, Mayella cant afford to live somewhere nice. Tom says “Yes, suh. I felt sorry for her…(Doc E). “ Ma’am? Asked Atticus, startled. Long’s you keep makin fun of me(Doc.C).”Lower classes didnt really get much respect so that leaves Mayella powerless. In addition to Mayella being a lowerclass, Mayella is a female. “Mayella has been beaten savagely by someone who led almost exclusively with his left..(Doc.B).” This shows women had no respect. “ Mayella looked at her father, who was sitting with his chair tipped against the railing. He sat straight up waiting for her to answer”(Doc.B)”.” He says you goddamn whore, ill kill ya(Doc.B)”. …show more content…
“ Are you being impudent to me boy?(Doc.C)”. Negroes did not have it easy in Maycomb at all. “I aint ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man…(Doc.D)”. Tom Robinson never was free because of his skin color and when a black man is accused of raping a white woman there is no easy way out. All in all Mayella is poor and a female who does not get any attention. Yet she is still white and that is how he has some power over not many people. Tom Robinson is black and will never even get as many rights as a poor white female such as Mayella
