Viruses Are Not Alive Viruses are not living. Scientists have been debating this for decades, but the truth is simply that viruses are not. They lack cells, don’t eat or grow, and can’t reproduce; so viruses are not living.
Viruses do not have cells (we agreed that living things have cells in our class consensus). Viruses do have a protein coat covering their genetic material, but they do not have a cell membrane or other organelles. All other living things are made up of one or more cells, which is a reason why viruses are not alive.
Viruses don’t feed or grow. They don't take in nutrients and they do not grow and increase in biomass when attacking a host cell. They only hijack the cell to make the virus replicate, losing a very small amount
