Somehow, everybody always wonders what power should the Federal government and the States have? This question is the biggest problems in our country during that time when Founding Fathers were creating a government for the United States. A lot of conversations today have been revolving around the relationships between the federal government and states. The article of Confederation, 1777 – 1781, was our first constitution that was completed after the article declared independence from Great Britain. The articles created a weak national government and left most power in the hands of states. Our country was only one year old at that time, but many states had existed over one hundred years already. The current government fixed many problems of the weak government that run under the Article of Confederation before. And, when the Constitution was ratified after the Bill of Rights became a part of it, the human’s rights issues were improved much better and the state rights are also well-protected in current constitution and the political practice. For instance, the States can establish local government, conduct elections, provide for public safety, regulate business within the state, make marriage laws and control abortion, etc. Some people consider that the power of the Federal governments to the State is too oppressive and they think the states should have power to control almost everything except monetary policy and raising army. However, it is not totally correct for me. I think they are trying to give themselves too much freedom from the United States government and by that way I believe in our nation will backtrack to the times of Article of Confederation. Then, the central government won’t have enough power to control the states and make them to work together as a cohesive country. The Bill Of Rights specifically states that the powers that are not given to the Federal Government in the U.S Constitution, are reserved for the states. For example, the Federal government doesn’t have the right for elections, health or state welfare what were given to the states from the Constitution. I think the power of the Federal Government is appropriate and it should be kept the same and should be
