Fences is a play about a man by the name of Troy Maxson and his family. He constantly lives in the past, claiming that racism is the reason he didn’t make it to the Major League and refusing to blame it on his age. He works for a garbage company where there were unfairly treatment to the black employees. He brought it to the boss’s attention that there wasn’t any black truck drivers. He eventually became the first black truck driver for that company. Troy believed in taking care of his responsibilities such as his family. He’s a strict man and doesn’t want his children to grow up to be like him. Although his son, Corey wants to play football, Troy pushes him to work and to focus on his education because he feels that there is no promising future in sports. Troy is also seen as a hypocrite because as he tries to pushes his family in the right direction was having an affair. Troy met his best friend Bono while they were in jail. Bono admires Troy’s ability to take responsibility and to be a leader. Bono suspects that Troy is having an affair and is afraid that he is going to mess up his marriage to Rose. Rose is Troy’s wife and she is the nurturing character. She stood by both her husband and her children. Troy’s brother Gabriel is mentally ill due to an accident during the war but he is also very wise. Gabriel’s character represent a voice of reason and he knew Troy’s fate all along. Gabriel had stated that when he had went to heaven he seen the book of judgment and that he saw Troy’s name and only Troy’s name. Meaning that he knew that Troy was going to die. Lyons is Troy’s oldest son from a previous marriage and he is a musician. Lyons doesn’t have a steady job just play at night clubs every blue moon. He normally comes to visit his father on Fridays to borrow money because he knows that is Troy’s payday. From his affair, Troy produced a daughter whom mother died while giving
