The scenes of the play Fences written by August Wilson are very significant. It is a play where the value of a family is viewed differently by each character. Rose the mother of Cory was very caring and all she wanted was for her family to be together. Meanwhile Troy, her husband focused on other things but the happiness of his family . This is where the understanding of the “fence” comes along. Many people might look at the book and ask themselves why would August Wilson title this play “Fences”. There are many reasons why the fence in this play is very important and one of them is associated with the Maxson family. The fence is important because it shows how Troy allowed the negative energy to get in between his family.

A fence that Rose always wanted. It was too late. Rose found out that Troy was going to be a dad, a dad of another woman. Just like Troy failed in building a fence in the backyard of the Maxon’s house, Troy also failed in keeping his family united and his marriage stable. On page 77 Troy says “ Alright ...Mr.Death. - I’m gonna take and build me a fence around this yard. See? I’m gonna build me a fence around what belongs to me. And then I want you to stay on the other side.” Troy is talking to death in this quote. Ever since Alberta died, Troy told death to stay on the other side of the fence because he didn't want it to take his family away from him. He then realized that the fence was a way to keep his family together. Troy committed the mistake to let Alberta into his life. Not only did he forgot the value of his family and what Rose was worth but he forgot that there were consequences for his actions. Those consequences let pushed his family away from him. Not only did his family loss respect but so did his best friend Bono. This is why Cory decided to stay on the other side of the fence. He was tired of the mistreatment that he received from his father. Rose was still inside the fence but he was a wifeless man after all the harm he caused. Rose’s project of building a fence was meaningless especially since Troy had torn the family
