I observed the study area and coffee lounge in One Earth inside of Talley. The room felt warm, about 74 degrees, but not only from the actual temperature. There are a lot of cozy spots in this lounge. For example, the chairs by the fireplace, which were always filled. The noise level was quiet, however those who were studying together would have quiet interactions with each other every once in awhile. The lighting was dimmed, thus adding to the warm feel of the area. Even the furniture, walls, and carpets maintained warmer earthy colors or colors that brought a sense of calmness. There were about 45 people in the lounge, not that many people as usual. A good majority of people were on laptops and if they were alone often had headphones in. …show more content…
I figured this would be how things would go for the remainder of the day - casual conversations, and then studying. At 10:26 a.m., a guy in an army outfit doing math tapped his pencil in frustration and he eventually left his work to go talk to his friends at another table who were talking about the game at Duke the previous night, and I realized how many different situations I was watching. There were people who were genuinely focused like the two girls discussing tutoring times at the table slightly in front of me, but there were also people such as the guy on facebook instead of studying the material on his laptop that was turned away from him. The two girls talking about tutoring times sat down around 10:34 a.m. The tutor said to the girl as they sat down, “I apologize that I got your name wrong at first, my advisor sent me 3 appointments at once and I read it at like 3 in the morning.” Towards the end of this 10 minute period, two guys, one in flannel and one in a red shirt, sat down at the army guy’s table and helped him with his
