George Wallace

George Wallace was known for his segregationist policies in the South during the 1960s and
1970s. Wallace’s position opposing racial integration was epitomized by his infamous state- ment: “I draw a line in the dust and toss the gauntlet before the face of tyranny. And I say segregation now, segregation tomorrow, and segregation forever.”

George Wallace was born in rural southeastern Alabama in 1919. Though his parents were dirt- poor farmers, Wallace was interested in politics from an early age.
