One of the best known historical heroes is George Washington. Perhaps what gives him this title is the fact that even though he held such high power, he chose to act as a citizen, rather than a ruler, and chose what he thought was best for his troops. George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 in Westmoreland County Virginia. George’s father owned land and slaves and cultivated tobacco. George grew up on Little Hunting Creek Plantation, later named Mount Vernon, and was the eldest of six children. George was homeschooled an apprenticed in growing tobacco, raising livestock and surveying. In the early 1750s, Robert Dinwiddie appointed Washington with a high rank in the Virginia militia. On Halloween of 1753, Washington was sent to Fort LeBouf to warn French off the British’s land. Washington appeared at the Second Continental Congress, dressed in uniform, implying he was ready for war. He was appointed Major General and Commander-in-Chief of the colonial army, ready to fight Great Britain. After losing many battles at first, Washington and his troops won their first victory over Britain in March of 1776. In August of the same year, Washington’s troops suffered a tremendous loss. The remainders of his troops were ordered to retreat across the Delaware River into Pennsylvania. On Christmas night of 1776, Washington’s men crossed the Delaware River and attacked unsuspecting British Forces, causing them to lose the battle greatly. During the winter of 1777, Washington’s Troops were barely hanging on. After many diseases and sicknesses struck, they pulled through and manage to win a few victories that spring. In 1782, after the battle of Yorktown, the war was coming to a
