1. Americans were caught between two cultures because the colonies had a new culture that developed from the European settlers who came to colonize the land; however, at the same time they also wanted to preserve and recreate the English culture in America. Already by the 18th century, America had certain economic and social differences distinguishing them from the British. To begin, America had great economic success. Unlike the British, America had an abundance of land and growth in agriculture that contributed to this success. America’s economy was also more export driven where more than one half of American goods went to Great Britain. While Americans tried to recreate the social structure of Great Britain, differences occurred as a result of the Great Awakening in America. It led to a widespread revival of the evangelical religion.

Many factors made America ripe for a religious awakening. To begin, Americans felt that organized religion had lost vitality. Americans also though that the teachings of ministers were dull and no longer heartfelt. There was a longing for greater devotion to religion that once existed during the time of Winthrop. Another factor was a need for more ministers to tend to the religious needs of the population. This led the colonists to happily welcome new priests to preach religion to the colonies. Lastly, the technology that existed at the time was another factor that made America ripe for a religious awakening. The printing press enabled the ideas and teachings of preachers, such as George Whitefield and Gilbert tenant, to be spread across the
