Introduction Health care is a vast and ever changing industry. It helps those who are in need of medical attention. This means that health care professionals deals with some of the most vulnerable people in the population. When dealing with vulnerable people there need to be safe guards in place to be sure that they are treated with high quality health care, in a timely manner, no matter their social, economic, religious, or sexual orientation. In order to be sure that this happens each and every time. There need to be checks and balances put in place, as well as a clear definition of what high quality health care is. The Survey is for adults who were seen as inpatients, excluding psychiatric patients (What is the HCAHPS Survey?, n.d.). This standardized survey tool and data collection method that has been used since 2006. It is used to measure the patients’ perspective of hospital care (The HCAHPS Survey – Frequently Asked Questions, n.d.). The HCAHPS are a national standard for the collecting and reporting of information that enables valid comparisons to be made across all U.S. hospitals. Eighteen are concrete items that encompass important aspects of the overall hospital experience. These include communication with doctors, and nurses, the responsiveness of hospital staff, as well as the cleanliness of the hospital environment. Also included are the quietness of the patient surroundings, pain management, and communication about medications, discharge instructions, as well as the overall hospital ratings. Lastly it includes a question about the recommendation of hospital. The survey also includes four items that direct patients to the appropriate questions. The HCAHPS survey is conducted in one of three ways, either through phone calls, written survey, or Interactive Voice response. The survey is available in multiple languages to better serve the different populations. The survey is available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Russian and Vietnamese in written format. It is available in English and Spanish for both the telephone and Interactive Voice Response versions.
