What is professionalism? Professionalism is the ability to have the skill and competence of a professional. A professional is specified in a certain activity and is paid rather than as a pastime. Everyone has heard of a professional athlete such as a professional baseball player. They are considered professional because they have worked, and strived to better their skills. By doing this they were recognized and are now able to play at a whole nether level. Working as a professional is somewhat like this. They attend training and there is also certain criteria that a person has to meet to be considered a professional. Especially in the health care field such as dental hygiene. People depend on health care providers when they are at their most vulnerable state, and want someone that takes there job serious and is competent on how to do the job. A professional should strive to be the elite person and be the best at what they do. Professionalism is what we all should strive to have as we make our way in the workforce. Dental hygienist need to have certain traits and characteristics. They also need to know to refer back to the code of ethics when an ethical or moral dilemma arises, so they can solve the problem that is best for the practice and the society. Being up to date with the latest treatment in dentistry, with continuing education courses, and research makes a dental hygienist valuable to his/her patients and to the practice. Professionals want the best outcomes and strive for greatness in the profession of their
