At the mark of a the new century, Charlemagne had conquered lands covering the majority of Europe today, including modern Belgium, Holland, Italy, France, western Germany Italy and parts of Spain. The papacy looked to Charlemagne for leadership and protection. In 799, doubts of the pope being able to lead effectively led to a rebellion against Leo III, which forced to him to flee to Charlemagne’s court. Charlemagne settled the issue, restored the pope to his office and then made a trip to Rome in order to support the pope himself. Unknowingly, “on Christmas day as Charlemagne prepared to celebrate Mass in the basilica of St. Peter, Pope Leo III placed a crown on his head while the assembled crowd acclaimed him emperor and then the pope performed the ritual act of obeisance due an emperor” (Sullivan). He strived to improve the royal government and religious establishments. This required a better education system for these officials. This eventually led to the Carolingian Renaissance. In order to inspire these efforts, he invited many clerics to come and teach in Aachen, the northern capital of the Charlemagne’s empire. Many programs of cultural revival and education are established for his administration. His even eventually led to the basis of Roman Type via the work of his teacher and librarian, Alcuin of York. But overall, Charlemagne helped form the foundation of Europe as a whole through his conquests and campaigns. Furthermore, “A German annalist later identified Europe and the kingdom of Charlemagne as one and the same. Charlemagne’s poets called him the “Father of Europe,” “the glory of Europe,” and “the shining light of Europe”” (Dutton 214). Obviously, Charles the Great made a huge impact in many aspects in regards to the history of
